Gender identity and queer expression via fatshion

So this is something I've been writing about in zines for a little while, and whilst I like to keep my zines focused on the political viewpoint of queerness and gender, I need an outlet for the fatshion part too. To me though, fatshion is more than frivolity and shopping. Fatshion IS political in itself. Fatshion says fuck you to your tunnel-vision beauty ideals. How I present myself to the world means more to me than 'hey, look at my nice outfit'. Its an expression of my sexuality, my gender identity, a projection of my inside to my outside.

I've found through endless searching very little in the way of blogs that combine what I am looking for, and although I'm not entirely sure how I'm going to do this myself, I'm going to try. I feel like it might end up a bunch of pictures of clothes from the less feminine end of the spectrum, which, you know, wouldn't be too bad. It is fucking hard being a fatty who doesn't want to wear dresses after all. I want it to be more than that though. Commentary that runs a little deeper. It's also most definitely not going to be loads of OOTD's. Not because I don't love OOTD's, I do, very much. Mostly because I just don't have enough clothes for that and when I find something I love it gets worn to death until it falls apart. It would be really fucking repetitive, is what I'm saying.

Anyway, lets begin with what I'm going to be wearing throughout January because I got them for Christmas!

ASOS Curve denim shirt (£25)
I bloody love this shirt. I'll be wearing it either buttoned right up like in this picture, possibly with a necklace, or unbuttoned with a band shirt.

H&M Jumper (£14.99)
Bright kelly green is my favourite colour and this jumper is much brighter than the picture. I couldn't find it on the H&M website but its from the range that only goes up to size 16 where you occasionally find 'oversized' fatty gems? Like this (it's a 16, I usually wear a 24-26!) My girlfriend got this for me and its perfect.

Simply Be "Fair Isle" jumper (£29)
So it's quite obviously not real Fair Isle, hence the quotation marks. What is this obsession with calling any jumper with a pattern Fair Isle anyway? Still, it is a nice jumper. I got it a month ago but it was an early gift from my mum.

Army Surplus hi-leg boots (£19.99)
I used to have some army assault boots which would still be going strong had part of the soles not been eaten by mice (don't ask), but assault boots are twice the price these days, even for used. My lovely girlfriend got me these instead, not brand new like the picture but Grade 1 which I prefer because it takes months to wear them in properly. Mine are from Jay Jay's army surplus in Sheffield, which is where I got my last pair over 10 years ago. I definitely recommend it if you're in the area.

  1. I am really excited to see you fatshion blogging! I wrote a bit about why I am sad that there aren't many queer bloggers in one of my zines. I got the denim shirt too and it's ace :)

    1. Hey :) I'm kinda excited about it, and I feel the same about a lack of queer bloggers... that's why I'm doing it! Love the shirt, I'm gonna be wearing it constantly. xo

  2. Exciting. I've never really blogged about my gender identity sexuality in relation to fashion even though there is plenty to talk about there. Looking forward to what you come up with.

Love that denim shirt and the boots.
